David Calleb Otieno on mukana hengästyttävän monessa. 40-vuotias kenialainen on kansalaisyhteiskunnan monitoimimies, jonka asiantuntijuus kattaa laajan kirjon teemoja kestävästä kehityksestä asevarusteluun ja perustuslaillisista kysymyksistä ruokaturvaan. Yksi Otienon monista rooleista on kansainvälisen sotilasmenojen vastaisen kampanjan (Global Campaign on Military Spending) koordinoiminen Afrikan mantereella. Otieno kertoi Pax-lehdelle sähköpostihaastattelussa, millaista on toimia rauhanaktivistina Afrikassa.

Itä-Afrikan Burundi luisui vuoden aikana sisällissodan partaalle. Kriisin sytytti valtakauttaan pidentänyt presidentti ja protestien väkivaltainen tukahduttaminen. Kansalaisjärjestöjen ihmisoikeussäätiö KIOS kerää joukkorahoituskampanjalla tukea burundilaisille ihmisoikeuspuolustajille.
